This is what the Mayo Clinic has to say about MRSA: MRSA infection can be fatal. Vancomycin is one of the few antibiotics still effective against hospital strains of MRSA infection, although the drug is no longer effective in every case. It may be a matter of time before it, too, becomes resistant to most antibiotics. The National Institute of Health says about MRSA: The outcome varies with the severity of the infection, and the general condition of the person who has the infection. MRSA pneumonia and blood poisoning have high death rates. If you share sporting equipment, clean it first with antiseptic solution.
Now, far be it from me, just an ordinary citizen, to think my personal physician was a little bit too unconcerned about my daughter's case of MRSA although in a few more days or maybe even ONE, the infections could have progressed so she could have lost her leg or even died!
They tell you it isn't anything to worry about, they will just prescribe an antibiotic and send you on your way. If it doesn't get better in a few days, better give them a call! It just makes me crazy to remember the words. Not that anything couldn't have happened this way, but when another of my children exhibited the same beginning symptoms, there was no urgency at all!
I guess they can try explaing to the poor unlucky souls who have no medical insurance what they are supposed to do when the infection soars in their bodies and they only way to fight it is with an antibiotic that costs $1,200 for 20 pills!
