5 beginning signs of mrsa

By Vicki at 10/30/07 09:55

Will you recognize MRSA in you or your child? Be aware that there are a couple of different strains, at least in my experience, and you should be aware of the warning signs for the worse of the two.

  1. Both kinds start out as a lump under the skin that is easily felt and very painful, but the lesser infection will remain the same in appearance although it may increase somewhat in size
  2. The area of skin immediately over the lump will be red in both types
  3. In the more severe infection, the lump will grow, and grow pretty quickly. In some cases the size will double in a day's time
  4. The redness over the lump will expand in size so it extends outward from the actual lump, and this happens fairly quickly. In my daughter's case, in a matter of four days, the infection had spread from a lump in her bikini line halfway down her thigh!
  5. There will be a fever with this type. My daughters occurred on the third day. At that point she had been given an antibiotic and had taken it for two days (We went to the family physician on day ONE).
Once it gets to the point where the infection is eating away at the tissues inside, the only antibiotic that seems to work is the vancomycin. That is great, except for those poor souls who have no health insurance will be paying $1,200 for 20 twenty pills.

If the redness is spreading, and there is fever, take them or go to the hospital. If your family doctor doesn't seem concerned, bypass them. It CAN mean the difference between life, death or loss of limb. Two people I know personally contracted this infection within the same two week period, neither related or even in contact with the other. One lost a finger and my daughter could have lost her leg. Don't wait if it shows these signs. If it stays a smallish red lump, it may be the lesser or the two.

This is what the experts are saying about MRSA

By Vicki at 10/26/07 14:35
staph infection Know more about Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Infection
This is what the Mayo Clinic has to say about MRSA: MRSA infection can be fatal. Vancomycin is one of the few antibiotics still effective against hospital strains of MRSA infection, although the drug is no longer effective in every case. It may be a matter of time before it, too, becomes resistant to most antibiotics.

The National Institute of Health says about MRSA: The outcome varies with the severity of the infection, and the general condition of the person who has the infection. MRSA pneumonia and blood poisoning have high death rates. If you share sporting equipment, clean it first with antiseptic solution.

Now, far be it from me, just an ordinary citizen, to think my personal physician was a little bit too unconcerned about my daughter's case of MRSA although in a few more days or maybe even ONE, the infections could have progressed so she could have lost her leg or even died!

They tell you it isn't anything to worry about, they will just prescribe an antibiotic and send you on your way. If it doesn't get better in a few days, better give them a call! It just makes me crazy to remember the words. Not that anything couldn't have happened this way, but when another of my children exhibited the same beginning symptoms, there was no urgency at all!

I guess they can try explaing to the poor unlucky souls who have no medical insurance what they are supposed to do when the infection soars in their bodies and they only way to fight it is with an antibiotic that costs $1,200 for 20 pills!

MRSA; how it is affecting our community and do we believe what the papers say?

By Vicki at 10/24/07 12:44
My daughter was diagnosed with MRSA Staph infection at the beginning of the year. It first started like an ingrown hair right in her bikini line and was very red and painful. I took her to our family doctor at that time, where she was prescribed an antibiotic and was told to come back in a few days if it had not improved. Well, within two days, the redness had spread to the size of her outspread hand and back to the doctor we went.

We were sent to the hospital and her doctor checked on her around 5:00 PM at which time it had spread ANOTHER 2 or three inches outward.
